James David ‘J.D.’ Grass passed away peacefully on November 6, 2024, in Dewey, Oklahoma. J.D. was born on October 11, 1960, in Claremore, Oklahoma, to Clayton “Ed” Tyner and Judith Loving. He was married to his wife, Shana, on December 4, 1990. J.D. enjoyed their life together in Salina, OK, on Lake Hudson. J.D. was a lifelong specialized welder devoted to his craft for many years and was known for his skill and dedication to his trade. Outside of his profession, he enjoyed attending sporting events of his family members, whether at football games, wrestling matches, or basketball games. He also had a love for the outdoors, spending countless hours hunting, fishing, and boating. J.D. was well known for his prize-winning chickens and took pride in continuing his father Ed’s legacy.
J.D. was happiest spending time with his children and grandchildren, instilling his Native American beliefs, customs, and traditions. J.D. was a proud Absentee Shawnee and Cherokee man who practiced traditional ways and passed them on with love and honor to those he loved most. J.D. was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Shana Elaine, parents Clayton “Ed” Tyner and Judith Loving, brother William Tyner, Grandmother Wyvonne “Maggie” Loving, and infant grandchildren, Blaykelinn and Brayznn.
J.D. is survived by sons Michael Grass and wife Linzi of Dewey, OK, DJ Craig and wife Rebekah of Pryor, OK, and Benjamin Grass of Bartlesville, OK. Daughters Shania Harris and husband Michael of Pryor, OK, Rachel Strain and husband Cameron of Salina, OK. Brothers Sam Tyner, Flint Tyner, Daniel Tyner, and Joe Tyner. Sisters Margaret Tyner, Kay Grass, Connie Grass, Mariah Tyner, and Hannah Tyner, 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Traditional Native American Services were held at New Hope Indian United Methodist Church in Dewey, Oklahoma, with Walter Dye officiating. Graveside services were held November 9, 2024, at Ross-Mayes cemetery, Salina, Oklahoma, with Walter Dye and Rev. Lorne Beck presiding.
