Velma Shambra

April 12, 1927 - February 26, 2025

Velma Ann Shambra was born to Gladys Whitlow, on April 12, 1927, in Langston, Oklahoma, and grew up in the Langston area.

She later attended Bishop College. After graduation she became a Medical Technician and in 1963 started working as a supervisor at St Francis Hospital, in Tulsa, in the Med Tech Department. She retired from there in 1992.

While in college, Velma joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and would become a life-time member. While there, she held numerous positions, including as Basileus and Sergeant at Arms.

For years she was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and served in the positions of Finance Committee, choir member, part of the women’s ministry, teaching Vacation Bible School, teaching Sunday School, and the Pastor-parish Relations Committee. She was a current member at Vision Family Ministry upon her departure from this world.

In 1963 she married jack Shambra, who preceded her in death. They were married for twenty-six years.

Velma’s other activities included singing in Messiah, playing bridge in Bridge Club, taking art classes and computer classes, crocheting, and being a member of the 30’s Club.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Shambra; mother, Gladys Whitlow, aunts, Mizura Allen, Ella Lee Clement, and Seppa Tolliver; Sally Nails, Raymond Shambra, Betty Shambra, Effie Shambra, and Bea Dixon.

Left to mourn her memory is her daughter, Waltrud Shambra; grandson, Richard Shambra; Melanie Conley, Stephanie Brasley, and a host of other cousins, relatives, and friends.

A time for friends and family to gather together to celebrate Velma’s life and share memories will be held
